Saxon Day Centre

Orpington's social hub for older people

What we do

A welcoming place to belong

The Saxon Day Centre is a friendly social hub for older people in Orpington and nearby areas — a place to meet others, enjoy regular entertainment, take part in daily activities and spend the day in good company. We are a not-for-profit organisation run by Age Concern Orpington and District, supporting wellbeing, independence and companionship in a safe, relaxed environment.

Who We Support

We welcome older people who benefit from company, conversation, gentle activity and a safe place to spend the day.

“I have been coming to the centre for about 2.5 years and I feel very grateful for all the work the staff and volunteers put in. It is a lifesaver for me.”

Our social hub welcomes people from Orpington and the wider area — from Swanley, Eynsford and Shoreham, through Knockholt and West Wickham, to Beckenham, Bromley, Chislehurst, Mottingham, Sidcup and Bexley.

We provide person-centred support and activities, and cater for a range of needs, including physical frailty, Parkinson’s and dementia. Wheelchair users are welcome if able to stand and transfer safely.

“I am virtually housebound and I welcome the chance to meet with other people.”

All new members receive a simple assessment so we can understand their needs and ensure they feel comfortable and supported.

“The staff are so kind and caring and my mum loves her days spent at the Saxon Centre.”

Free Taster Days are available —contact the Centre for more information or to arrange a visit.

What’s On

Our social hub offers a friendly mix of everyday activities and regular entertainment. It’s varied, enjoyable and designed to bring people together.

We encourage small social groups built around shared interests, such as gardening, games and crafts.

Daily Activities include:

  • Quizzes and games
  • Crafts and creative projects
  • Music and singing
  • Gentle exercise
  • Group discussions and reminiscence

Additional entertainment is provided through shows, seasonal celebrations and themed days at the centre. These bring more music and laughter, visiting guests and special treats.

“On the days there is music and dancing my husband comes home a different person and he thoroughly enjoys dinner and dessert.”

Meals and refreshments

Our catering team caters for a variety of dietary requirements and prepares a fresh hot lunch every day, served around the table with friends. Refreshments are available on arrival and throughout the day. To see example menus, click here.

Care Package and Support

Qualified care staff are on duty at all times to provide gentle support based on each person’s needs.
We can also offer short-term and emergency respite.

“We are new users of your service, but I feel confident about Valerie being with you. She comes home content and says that she has had a good day; what more could I ask?”
