Services

Age Concern Orpington & District is a not for profit, charitable company which provides day care services at the Saxon Day Centre for elderly members of the local community.

Our mission is to provide high quality, dignified care and a range of person-centred activities, at an affordable price, that support the physical and mental well-being of our clients by reducing loneliness and enabling individuals to maintain their independence within a safe environment.

Our Clients

The Saxon Day Centre caters for individuals living in Orpington or the surrounding areas, who may be physically frail and/or have dementia.

Many of our clients live within 2 or 3 miles of Orpington, in places such as Petts Wood, St Paul’s Cray, St Mary Cray, Chelsfield, Farnborough and Locksbottom. However, our location means that we are easily accessed from further afield by those living in areas around Swanley; Eynsford, Shoreham and Knockholt; West Wickham Beckenham, Bromley and Chislehurst; as well as Mottingham, Sidcup and Bexley.

Clients using wheelchairs must be able to stand and transfer from their wheelchairs.

All clients are assessed prior to attending the Centre to determine the level of care needed and to ensure that we are able to provide care which is appropriate to the needs of each client.

Clients may self-refer or may be referred via Health Professionals or Bromley Council Social Services.

Please contact the Day Centre Manager for further details.

Facilities

There is easy access to the building and to all of the areas and facilities within the Saxon Centre, including to the:

  • Main dining room, lounge areas and activity rooms
  • Garden, with seating
  • Library and pool table
  • Disabled toilets

We also have parking space for car drop-offs (including a disabled bay)

Please note that The Saxon Day Centre has a no smoking policy.

Care Package

Qualified care staff are on duty at all times to deliver a care package which is determined based on the needs and wishes of each client. Services and activities available include:

  • Breakfast, lunch and a take-home sandwich service (more detail on catering at the Centre can be found here)
  • Shopping service for essential items
  • Physical activities and exercise
  • News and current affairs and other group discussions
  • Quizzes and games
  • Entertainment

Short term and emergency respite are available to regular clients to enable planned additional days of attendance or attendance at short notice for the benefit of clients and/or their carers.

External users:

We welcome external users to the Saxon Centre, who can pay for the use of specific facilities rather than the full care package.

Please contact the Day Centre Manager for further details.

Charges

We charge a daily fee for people to attend the centre, payable monthly in advance. This charge is based on individual requirements and is a fully inclusive price including lunch and refreshments, care and activities.

Band 1: £39.50

Band 2 £48.00

Band 3: £58.00

Most of our clients are self-funded. Clients who are referred to the centre through social services may have their membership partially or entirely funded via direct payment or a personal budget scheme administered by Bromley Council which will need to be topped up by the client.

Please contact the Day Centre Manager for further details.

Admission Bands

The Centre has an admission procedure for those who wish to attend on a regular basis. While formal referrals by a health professional are not necessary, there are certain assessments which must be made in order to designate a new client to one of three ‘bands’. The essential criteria for clients in each band are as follows:

Band One

  • Able to function relatively independently
  • Able to self-mobilise with or without the assistance of a walking aid
  • May have mild confusion or a diagnosis of early dementia (e.g. Alzheimer’s)

Band Two

  • Requires some physical assistance for personal care (e.g. going to the toilet, bathing and eating)
  • Has a confirmed diagnosis of mild to moderate dementia

Band Three

  • Has a confirmed diagnosis of moderate to severe dementia
  • Requires more support with personal care

Opening Hours

We are open Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 3:00pm; we are closed at weekends and on bank holidays.
